OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, has launched SearchGPT, a new AI search engine designed to provide real-time, organised information instead of just listing links.

Currently in its prototype phase, SearchGPT uses the GPT-4 model and is available to 10,000 test users.

SearchGPT features a simple interface where users enter their queries into a large text box. It delivers clear, summarised answers with relevant sources, and includes a “visual answers” feature, though details on this are unclear.

OpenAI has partnered with major news organisations like The Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press to address concerns about its impact on publishers. This collaboration ensures that publishers' content is respected and properly credited. Publishers can choose to prevent their content from being used in the training of OpenAI's models, but their content will continue to be displayed in search results.

SearchGPT will eventually be integrated into ChatGPT. The initial rollout is limited to 10,000 users, with a waitlist for others interested in joining. OpenAI seeks to deliver precise and timely search results by ensuring transparency and working closely with content creators.

This launch adds to the growing competition in AI search, facing rivals like Google’s AI Overviews and Perplexity. Unlike Perplexity, which has faced criticism for how it handles publisher content, OpenAI’s approach focuses on working with publishers to ensure fair use and attribution.
